Labor Day

Labor Day marked our final camping hoorah this summer. Grandpa Bobby drove up from Oklahoma and spent the weekend with us. Case and Grandpa Bobby bunked up together in their own tent and took a couple 4 wheel rides through the mountains together. The boys love 4 wheel riding. Anywhere. Anytime. They are game. The weather was cool so we were bundled up the entire trip and kept a fire blazing all day and most of the night. But having a campfire 24-7 was perfect for all the smores that were cooked. Case must have eaten at least 30. Breakfast, lunch and dinner was followed by a round of smores. We spent another loud and rowdy day at the river racing sticks and playing basketball with rocks. In fact, we were so loud that Grandpa Bobby was able to find us after we left him napping at camp by just the sound of our hoops, hollars and cheering.

Nature is a beautiful thing and the cooler weather meant we were privileged to see the very first aspens changing color. When the leaves turn yellow, pictures don't do justice to their beauty. The leaves look like they are glowing. The boys and I even went on a search to pick a glowing leaf one afternoon. Every time we believed we found a glowing leaf, by the time we got closer, it turned out to be just another yellow leaf, but soon we would find a different leaf in the distance that glowed and chase that one. Kind of like chasing the end of a rainbow, we never could find an actual glowing leaf, but we had fun trying. On our adventures we also found some cool crawly things: A fuzzy yellow caterpillar, dragon flies mating and the coolest toadstool known to mankind.

We played at least 200 games of corn hole, 100 must have been just between Case and Grandpa Bobby. We played so much corn hole Cody and I decided we needed to expand our camp games for the sake of our adult sanity next year and offer a tad more variety to the lazy afternoons. The boys climbed the rocks next to our camp sight and picked wild raspberries from the bushes growing in-between the boulders. They filled their bellies with fresh fruit, packed a couple "to go baggies" full of berries and and we even had raspberry pancakes one morning. We spent 4 days in the woods and although they were fun, 4 days is a long time. I was glad to come home to showers, a non-hot dog meal, toilet paper and mattresses. See you next year Peru Creek!
