Gma and Bpa arrived early on the 4th for games and fun. Everyone enjoyed playing bean bag toss and washers in the front yard before the rain drove us inside where we picked up the gaming spirit with a never ending game of pegs and jokers. By the time pegs and jokers was over, the kids felt left out so we picked up another never ending game and played crazy 8's with the boys while the rain continued to come down.
After our guests Rick and Seth arrived Cody fired up the grill and mass quantities of meat were cooked. Hamburgers, brats, tri-tip beef, pasta salad, baked beans, chips and dip were part of the menu. Despite being stuffed to uncomfortable limits, after dinner the rain stopped long enough for Bpa and the boys to kick around the ice cream ball and make homemade vanilla ice cream before the fire was stoked for smokes. Case took down 4 full smores! The food never ends!
We took advantage of fireworks sales and made up for lost times with $100 worth of kid friendly explosives. Our version of 'bombs bursting in air' consisted of smoke bombs, snaps, snakes, can of worms, sparklers, fountains, crickets, tanks, turtles, spinners, blooming flowers and black cats joined the evening party. By 10:30 Case was asleep in a chair groggily asking to go to bed. Finally my parenting skills kicked in and I put the poor boy to bed.
The next day we picked up the fun again and popped off the remaining fireworks at a more age appropriate late afternoon hour. The boys were delighted when Cody let them use the punk to light smoke bombs and snakes by themselves. We talked about firework safety and how to 'run' as soon as the fuse was lit. Our studious boys took our safety lesson to heart and sprinted like their life depended on it as soon as the smoke bomb was lit. Kind of funny because….well, its a smoke bomb. But better safe than sorry. Happy Birthday America. We are thankful for the America we live in and all those who have fought for freedom. You are our hero.
