Camping Days

We have camped at Beaver Damn twice this past month and have at least 2-3 more trips scheduled before labor day. Beaver creek is a beautiful little camping spot near Keystone so high up in the mountains the trees stop and only bare mountain show. The creeks and rivers are plentiful and you can hear rushing water wherever you go. The water is beautiful but beware, its all snow melt and freezing! The elevation is high so the nights are cold as well. To sleep, I wear thermals, pants, 2 pair of socks, tee shirt, long sleeved shirt, sweatshirt with a hood and sleep with a blanket in my sleeping bag.

If sleeping on the ground in the cold doesn't seem fun; what does make camping fun? Hiking, searching for firewood, roasting hotdogs, stick races in the river, burning trash, pooping in the trees, smores for dessert every night, 4 wheel rides, no phones, rock climbing, feeding the chipmunks cheetos, doing nothing and corn hole competitions. We even stayed up late, watched a meteor shower and made a bunch of wishes.

This past weekend Rick and Dave, little Cody and a few other friends were in the same area camping next to us, so it felt like we had our own little neighborhood of tents. The best part is when company came over to our camp site for dinner one night, I didn't have to sweep the floor (its all dirt). I don't have to clean up dinner dishes (we just burn the trash). And I don't have to get dressed (everyone is dirty!).

The big boys listened to music and looked up into the mountains through binoculars searching for goats, sheep and deer. They were all lined up leaning over the back of the tail gate taking turns looking through the scope for hours. You would have thought there was a peep show in the mountains. The smaller boys, climbed rocks, ate smores, played games and danced around the fire. Case wanted to find out if the tooth fairy delivered money in the woods so he wiggled his loose front tooth all weekend and finally got that thing out with the crowd watching. FYI: the tooth fairy delivered $5 under Case's pillow in our tent. Now I have an adorable kid with 0 front teeth! I LOVE IT! After the sun went down, the grown ups stayed awake talking. Cole wanted "to be a part of the grown up group" and stayed up until 10pm which was later than any of the other kids or teens lasted.

I love that we have gotten to go back to the same place several times. The boys are familiar with the area and feel comfortable running around acting like they own the place.  We don't have a lake house or annual ski trip, but this feels a little like our vacation home. Next trip is in 2 weeks. :)
